Six Holistic Ways to Manage Menopause

Navigating menopause with vitality and grace isn’t just a possibility—it’s something we champion at Limitless! Our approach is designed to help women with busy lives in Hong Kong manage menopause symptoms through a blend of effective strategies that are backed by science.

1. Use Strength Training As a Powerful Tool

Strength training is essential, not just for maintaining muscle and mitigate sarcopenia but for boosting your metabolism and enhancing mental health. It’s an effective way to combat the fatigue and weight changes that often accompany menopause. Incorporating regular strength training sessions can significantly alleviate menopausal symptoms, empowering you to feel more energetic and robust.  Read more about strength training during menopause.

2. Enhance Sleep Quality

Sleep disturbances are common during menopause, often exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations. The long-term effect of a poor night’s sleep can affect both physical health, but also take a toll on mental health and wellbeing, your energy, work and relationships.  If you’re actively pursuing fitness goals and find yourself experiencing a plateau, it could be helpful to reflect upon how you’re sleeping and rethink sleep habits.  Prioritize creating a cool, soothing sleep environment and establishing a calming bedtime routine. Lightweight bedding and maintaining a cooler room temperature can significantly improve your sleep quality, making it easier to rest well through the night.  Explore strategies to improve sleep.

3. Manage Stress Like Your Life Depends On It

Menopause increases vulnerability to depression and anxiety, perhaps via estrogen fluctuations affecting serotonin and GABA, as concluded by this study.  When you feel like you’re losing your mind, it can trigger all sorts of stress signals that correlate with anxiety and depression.  In turn, stress can aggravate menopausal symptoms, resulting in poorer management around nutrition, exercise, and important life decisions; thus, a vicious cycle. So, manage stress like your life depends on it, because it does.

There are many ways to down regulate, including meditation, specific types of exercise and other acts of self-care that lift your mood.  Integrating mindfulness practices into your daily routine can help manage stress effectively. Why not start your day with a 10-min sunrise walk? Allocate a window to regulate your nervous system for 5-minutes after a high-stakes meeting.  Take 5 diaphramic breaths before a meal.  Know when to take a break and learn how to enjoy it without guilt.  No matter what your break looks like, it’s about creating calm in the chaos and sustaining your incredible life in harmony.

4. Specific Nutrition for Hormonal Health

Your diet is your fuel for the body AND the brain. New research suggests cognitive blips may be linked to how severely we experience menopause symptoms — especially depression and sexual problems such as painful sex, low desire, or trouble with arousal. In short, in perimenopause and menopause, as estrogen declines, women lose some of the neuroprotective advantages of the hormone, making them more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease.

Ramp up on nutrient-rich foods like lean proteins, leafy greens, and whole grains. Ensure you’re getting enough calcium, magnesium, and vitamins D and B to support bone health, metabolic function, and overall vitality during menopause.  Protein aids in the production of hormones, which is crucial during the hormonal fluctuations of menopause. Don’t be afraid of carbs but DO manage the right carbs AND choose the right fats.  Here are nutrition ideas suggested by neuroscientists and nutritionist, Dr. Lisa Mosconi.

5. Happy Gut, Happy Body

A happy gut is a cornerstone of feeling good.  Higher levels of estrogen and progesterone are associated with more diversity in the microbiome, and a healthier overall body. The hormone fluctuations in the years before, during and after menopause can send the microbiome into an unbalanced state.  As hormone levels drop during midlife, the microbiome diversity also drops. According to some studies, the diversity of the gut microbiome peaks and plateaus at about age 40. This means that during midlife, changes occur in the gut that affect the rest of the body.  More and more studies are now suggesting that the different systems of the body do not function in isolation. It is all connected, and the gut seems to be the foundation of much more than we realized. Taking steps toward a healthy gut can go a long way to help you feel strong and energized during midlife.

Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach and Hong Kong’s voted Women of Wellness, Tricia Yap,  has helped hundreds of women address health issues through the scope of improving gut conditions and using diagnostic tools like the GI-MAP.  Here are 3 of her most popular and effective tips for busy women in Hong Kong:

  1. Eat whole foods with plenty of fiber, with a goal of consuming at least 25 – 35 grams per day. Most people do not get enough fiber through nutrition alone and need to add a fiber supplement to reach the recommended daily intake.
  2. Focus on eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Focus your time on the perimeter of the supermarket where the fresh, whole foods are usually stocked.
  3. Stay hydrated. Drinking at least 8, 8 ounce glasses of water each day can help to regulate your bowel movements and prevent constipation.
